atmega 32 hardware problem

Postby milindfuria » Thu Jan 14, 2010 9:31 am

> I am designing a development board using ATMEGA 32 and also has other IC's like FT232 and a regulator 1117 (5 volts). Many sensors and LCD are still to be connected.
In the board I am getting all the desired voltage levels at all points but still the circuit is not working. Is there any problem with the current flow because when i measured current, it was just 15 mA on entire board. If yes, then how am I supposed to fix it ? Please help
I have used a double sided PCB which is self made(using EAGLE)

Additional Details
i havent used autoroute facility and have made it by hand. I am using a 16 Mhz crystal. Also, since all the ic's are surface mounted i could not test on the bread board. Although, circuit is fine.
The problem is I am getting voltage across the power on led of atmega but still its not glowing and also the atmega32 is not getting programmed
Help please help :| :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :(

Hi. Firstly I have stress to that I have no experience whatsoever with the ATMEGA 32 controller and secondly since I don’t have the said board in front of me it is very hard for me to give you any proper diagnostic answers to your problem of an inactive board of why the power-on LED is not illuminated (this in its self should be easily rectified), why it doesn’t program and also why you are drawing only 15mA across the whole board when you are expecting it to draw more. I assume this is the production model against the prototype model. – did you prototype it first using preferable prototyping boards before moving it to a production type board.

Fault finding can very time consuming in that it means going over the board until the fault is located, in which usually comes down to three things dry joint/s/open circuits, cross solder/shorts or bad component/s/part/s – by mishap or other, intermittence or other. I have not included a cracked PCB allowing minute cross currents, within the likely faults, but must never be discounted. Or am I including an incorrectly wired circuit.

Maybe I could guide you though the fault finding process but this will mean that it would best if I had the schematic of the hardware in front of me which includes your ICSP connections. Also uploading photos of the board in question may also help.

If anything that I built worked first time after powering on I would more than likely fall off my chair. For me, the length of time it takes me to build something, - it will usually be guaranteed that it will take me twice as long to find its fault/s. Even if that means breaking it up into stages by making cuts in its traces and going over and over again systematically until the fault/s is/are located. Nothing that I have built over the many years has ever got me beat and I hope it doesn’t to you. Regards
